SPonge Enzymes and Cells for Innovative AppLications

SPECIAL was an EU-funded, 7FP project aiming at delivering breakthrough technologies for the biotechnological production of cellular metabolites and extracellular biomaterials from marine sponges. The consortium united seven world-class research institutions covering a wide range of marine biotechnology-related disciplines and four knowledge-intensive SMEs active in the field of sponge culture, drug development and nanobiotechnology. GAIA participated as a full partner. Besides being involved in sampling and farming activities (RTD), GAIA led the Dissemination and Outreach WP. Launched at the end of 2010, SPECIAL ended in November 2013.
